LG U+ to deploy 600G fiber backbone across South Korea

Jan. 25, 2021
The fiber network's ROADMs will feature Ciena’s WaveLogic 5 Extreme and WaveLogic Ai coherent optical engines to support 600G wavelengths.

Ciena (NYSE: CIEN) says it will assist Korean services provider LG U+ in the deployment of a ROADM based fiber backbone network across Korea. The ROADMs will feature Ciena’s WaveLogic 5 Extreme and WaveLogic Ai coherent optical engines to support 600G wavelengths.

LG U+ will make the leap from 100G to 600G wavelengths with the new ROADM technology, incorporated into the Ciena 6500 platform. The fiber network will offer low-latency, route diversity, and direct connections among large cities without the need for regeneration. Built-in OTDR capabilities within the 6500 ROADMs will enable real-time line condition monitoring, which Ciena says will decrease troubleshooting time and improve network management and operations.

Other capabilities include support of the disaster recovery requirements of government, financial, and large enterprises through third party interworking certification. LG U+ also will be able to ensure dedicated line services with enhanced security through optical layer encryption. LG U+ will leverage Ciena’s Manage, Control and Plan (MCP) SDN controller to automate service delivery as well.

“Amid the expansion of cloud services such as telecommuting, video conferencing and remote classes, we are building a new backbone network that can accommodate the needs of various corporate customers. With a flexible and stable transmission network, we expect that companies can provide a higher level of service," said Sung-cheol Koo, head of LG U+’s wired business.
