Community Telecom Services chooses ADTRAN to replace Huawei FTTH equipment

Community Telecom Services (CTS), a public utility owned by the city of Monticello and Wayne County, KY, has chosen ADTRAN to supply equipment to replace Huawei gear in the service provider’s fiber to the home (FTTH) broadband network. CTS will use the Total Access 5000 (TA5000) fiber access platform to enable fiber broadband in previously underserved communities in rural Kentucky.

CTS serves 3,300 subscribers across its footprint, near the edge of the Appalachian Mountains. Deployment of the TA5000 will enable the company to deliver FTTH broadband services via GPON now and XGS-PON in the future. The deployment will include an expansion of services to parts of the area where the terrain made fiber rollouts expensive to deploy and maintain.

The new PON systems also will improve services to business and institutional customers. For example, Monticello is home to several houseboat manufacturers. CTS also offers broadband services to the University of Kentucky’s College of Agriculture, Food and Environment cooperative extension site in Wayne County.
