VIAVI unveils mOSA optical spectrum analysis module for MAP lab and manufacturing test platform

June 3, 2021
The mOSA provides a combination of size, flexibility, and performance that will appeal in both lab and manufacturing environments as coherent technology becomes increasingly important, according to Matt Adams, senior product manager at VIAVI.

VIAVI Solutions Inc. (NASDAQ: VIAV) has extended its LightDirect family of hot-swappable test test modules with the mOSA Module. The mOSA provides optical spectrum analysis capabilities to VIAVI’s Multiple Application Platform (MAP) Optical Manufacturing Test system. The module is the 18th released for the modular MAP system.

The mOSA provides a combination of size, flexibility, and performance that will appeal in both lab and manufacturing environments as coherent technology becomes increasingly important, according to Matt Adams, senior product manager at VIAVI. The single-slot module enables significant footprint savings – as much as 5 RUs versus conventional rack-mounted optical spectrum analyzers (OSAs), he said. The approach provides OSA capabilities for a variety of applications, from single-chassis 400ZR testing to portable lab use to the manufacturing floor.

From a performance perspective, the mOSA will support requirements from 1225 to 1660 nm. The module offers < 15 pm RBW and 20-pm wavelength accuracy. In the C-Band, its rep rate is 2 Hz. Its level sensitivity is +20 dBm to -70 dBm. The mOSA also comes with an enhanced, web-enabled GUI that makes operation easy and efficient, Adams stated.

While 400ZR testing may prove a salient near-term use, Adams said the mOSA also will support such requirements as 400GBASE-LR4 as well as O-Band and L-Band designs. The module will be open for orders in the late June/early July timeframe, with first deliveries shipping during the end of summer or early fall.

VIAVI will highlight the mOSA as well as other elements of its portfolio during next week’s virtual OFC 2021, June 7-11.
