Telia Carrier deploys Cisco NCS5500 series routers in fiber backbone for 400 Gigabit Ethernet capabilities

Feb. 10, 2020
The upgrade comes as Telia Carrier deployed more than 10,000 new 100GbE ports during 2019.

Telia Carrier has deployed added 400 Gigabit Ethernet (400GbE) capabilities to its fiber backbone via deployment of Cisco (NASDAQ: CSCO) NCS5500 series routers. The upgrade comes as Telia Carrier deployed more than 10,000 new 100GbE ports during 2019.

According to Cisco, Telia Carrier required additional capacity, speed, and efficiency in its Internet fiber backbone to keep up with the demands of a customer base that exceeds 2000 customers in more than 120 countries. The service provider can now offer its customers transmission rates ranging for Gigabit Ethernet to 400GbE. Meanwhile, Telia Carrier plans to leverage partially disaggregated IP over DWDM that the upcoming wave of 400-Gbps pluggable coherent modules will enable.

“Conventional architectures and technologies built on decades of accumulated complexity and yesterday's truths fall short in helping us keep up with customer demands for more, consistent bandwidth and a high-quality experience. This is especially true as more value is shifting to software, hardware cycles are becoming shorter, and ongoing 400G standardization is poised to finally disrupt the optical networking market,” commented Staffan Göjeryd, CEO at Telia Carrier. “With Cisco leading the market in high-capacity transport, they were the perfect fit to help us reach this monumental milestone to continue to perform at the highest caliber, while also reducing costs.”

Telia Carrier leverages its AS1299 global fiber backbone to provide a range of services to its customers. The service provider extended the reach of its fiber network through multiple extension projects last year (see, for example, “Telia Carrier adds new fiber network route, terabit PoP”).
