Hawaiki to leverage Ciena WaveLogic 5 Extreme for submarine cable capacity increase

Use of Ciena’s latest generation coherent optical engine will increase transmission rates, lower latency, and improve economic efficiency, according to Ciena.

Hawaiki Submarine Cable LP and Ciena (NYSE: CIEN) say the transpacific submarine network operator will follow up an earlier deployment of Ciena’s GeoMesh Extreme technology with the addition of WaveLogic 5 Extreme capabilities. Use of Ciena’s latest generation coherent optical engine will increase transmission rates, lower latency, and improve economic efficiency, according to Ciena.

The 15,000-km Hawaiki Transpacific Cable connects Australia, New Zealand, American Samoa, Hawaii, and the U.S. West Coast (see Hawaiki Submarine Cable system ready for service). The network’s owner and operator announced its intention to leverage Ciena’s GeoMesh Extreme portfolio last year (see "Hawaiki submarine cable to leverage Ciena GeoMesh Extreme"), and now plans to include the WaveLogic 5 Extreme capabilities deployed on Waveserver platforms after successful field trials.

“As we continue to see unprecedented demand for more connectivity, including a significant increase driven by the global pandemic, it was essential for Hawaiki to further expand its network capabilities to better serve the market,” said Rémi Galasso, CEO and founder of Hawaiki. “Ciena has delivered outstanding results during our trial and this new upgrade makes Hawaiki the first subsea operator in the South Pacific trans-oceanic region to achieve 500-Gbps wavelengths.

“While we continue to increase our market share, this latest network upgrade with Ciena will enable us to sharpen our connectivity solution and better support our customers evolving requirements in this increasingly digital world,” added Galasso.
