VIAVI collaborating with China Mobile in support of 5G roll-outs

VIAVI Solutions Inc. says it has provided a range of wireless and optical test instruments to China Mobile in its role as a preferred vendor.

VIAVI Solutions Inc. (NASDAQ: VIAV) says it has provided a range of wireless and optical test instruments to China Mobile in its role as a preferred vendor. The Chinese network operator is using the test equipment to prepare for widespread roll out of 5G mobile networks.

For example, VIAVI supported the China Mobile Research Institute’s (CMRI’s) efforts to validate 5G base station performance during R&D testing of wireless network equipment in China Mobile’s 5G Phase I project. CMRI used the VIAVI TM500 Network Tester in this effort; the instrument can be used in such use cases as 5G multi-UE peak throughput testing, up to UL 8 layers and DL 16 layers.

Meanwhile, VIAVI says it also is working with China Mobile to support development of Slicing Packet Network (SPN) with FlexE interface technology for 5G transport networks. The company says it offers SPN features in the ONT-600 QFlex Module based on China Mobile specifications as proposed for standardization by the ITU-T. China Mobile used the ONT-600 in a 5G multi-vendor bearing network interoperability test at the recent OptiNet China Conference. The test demonstrated the advantages of SPN technology for high bandwidth, low latency, ultra-high precision synchronization, and flexible management and control, VIAVI says.

"With 55 commercial networks expected by the end of 2019, this is the year the promise of 5G becomes reality. Next-generation network performance is expected to transcend today’s expectations for coverage, speed, and latency, delivering a truly transformational experience,” said Oleg Khaykin, president and CEO of VIAVI. “Through close collaboration with committed market leaders such as China Mobile, VIAVI is helping to advance technology standards and launch the era of 5G mass adoption in China and around the world."
